An Analyst's perspective on markets

A Reality Check for the AI Hype

While no single catalyst drives a market correction, Friday’s pullback was symbolic in magnitude to temporarily cool off the hype, particularly within AI-related segments. The numbers speak for themselves: the Nasdaq slid 5% while the SOX plummeted 10%, marking the deepest single-day correction since March 2020.

Deconstructing the Sell-Off

The catalysts, as commonly quoted in news, make all sense in hindsight, but nobody has a crystal ball for the timing.

  • Liquidity drains: Investors aggressively locking in profits to free up capital for the SpaceX raise.
  • Earnings friction: Broadcom’s disappointing guidance acting as a reality check.
  • Sector rotation: A swift migration out of overextended chip and memory names.

The correction was felt across the board, breaking short-term momentum and forcing a market-wide reset.

The Technical Footprint

The price action mirrors historical correction patterns where leading stocks suffer the sharpest intraday retreats. After the correction, the market leaders managed to hold their 10-day and 20-day moving averages. We expect sentiment to cool and consolidate in the near time. In our view, it is a normal, though significant pullback after a strong market re-rating. The fundamental AI re-rating trend hasn’t changed but it needs some consolidation to continue.

It is also a crucial window to identify the pockets of capital showing relative strength during this consolidation—they will inevitably emerge as the leaders of the next leg.
