An Analyst's perspective on markets

Jackson Hole Reality Check

Market breadth continues to narrow, with only a limited number of segments managing to outperform. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s address at Jackson Hole intensified market anxiety around a potential rate hike at the upcoming September FOMC meeting. Following his hawkish tone on persistent inflation pressures, the CME FedWatch tool saw rate-hike probabilities surge toward 57% from 35% last Thursday.

The immediate reaction was a broad-based knee-jerk selloff across major subsectors. This included sharp pullbacks in lagging high-beta pockets, such as Silicon Photonics, Optics, Memory, and Semiconductor equipment, as well as previously resilient themes like Cybersecurity, Biotech, and select Crypto assets.

The price action in NVDA remains a key concern: a 5% drop on Friday (28 August) gave back half of its post-results surge (+9% on Thursday) despite top- and bottom-line beats for Q2 FY27. This inability to hold gains in the leading name highlights just how fragile sentiment remains across the semiconductor space.

Rather than signaling a definitive macro turning point, the symposium has introduced heightened uncertainty into an already choppy, range-bound tape. In sharp contrast to the early August risk-on momentum, the current environment demands risk management and reducing net exposure.

Pockets of Relative Strength & Mega-Cap Safe-haven Demand

Despite broad weakness, a small pocket of leadership is holding up remarkably well:

  • Software Leadership: Select enterprise software names continued to print new 52-week highs throughout the week, decoupling from broader hardware and semiconductor weakness. It includes a few names we highlighted last week in our newsletter.
  • Flight to Quality in Mag 7: Safe-haven demand rotated back into the Magnificent 7. This reinforces our view that the market continues to reward disciplined capital allocation paired with tangible monetization pipelines. Among the group, Microsoft (MSFT) exhibits the most constructive post-earnings share price trajectory.
  • Biotech: The post-symposium dip in Biotech looks more like a modest pullback than a structural breakdown. Monitoring whether the sector holds key moving averages and prior breakout levels will signal if this leading theme remains intact.

Crypto Assets

Crypto’s relative strength remains notable. The sector’s resilience is largely underpinned by renewed momentum behind Trump’s push on Clarity Act, which markets view as cementing long-term regulatory clarity and policy support for the broader ecosystem.

Following months of base building, crypto absorbed the Jackson Hole shock with only modest, orderly pullbacks. As illustrated in the charts below for Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Hyperliquid (HYPE), the asset class held up well. This relative strength stands in stark contrast to traditional safe-havens like Gold (-3%) and Silver (-4%), which saw meaningful liquidation in the face of a firmer dollar and climbing yields.

Precious metals see more significant pullback upon higher rate hike expectation.

Favoring a cautious approach

Overall, major indices point to a choppy and trendless market environment, offering an unfavorable backdrop for adding risk. Under these conditions, tactical discipline and capital preservation must take priority over chasing aggressive returns.
